PARTICIPATION IN 2024 OLYMPIC GAMES (CITY COUNCIL)

I. SUMMARY

The City of Los Angeles is sponsoring a bid for the 2024 Olympic Games. Similar to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, Stub Hub Center is being proposed as a venue. This report discusses the commitments required from the City by the International Olympic Committee to host Olympic Events. The City of Los Angeles is requesting that we send the International Olympic Committee a commitment letter.

II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation

The City Council should discuss the requested commitment letter and give direction. The Council should authorize the Mayor to sign the commitment letter, incorporating any Council or City Attorney concerns.

IV. BACKGROUND

The City of Los Angeles is applying to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. The application also covers the Paralympic Games. Much like the successful 1984 Olympics, the City of Los Angeles is planning on using existing facilities and services in order to control and spread out the costs of the games. The 1984 Games were successful in attracting private and corporate sponsorship and the 2024 bid proposal intends to include private and corporate sponsorship as well.
The 1984 Olympics are also viewed as a success due to the use of existing regional venues to avoid the high costs of the construction of new facilities. The City of Carson participated in the 1984 Summer Games through the bicycle velodrome at the former Home Depot Center (now Stub Hub Center).
The Los Angeles Olympic Committee is proposing to use the Stub Hub Center for four events - rugby, tennis, BMX and track cycling. The Stub Hub Center would host two Paralympic Events - tennis and track cycling. The Olympic Committee is in negotiations with AEG Worldwide for an exclusive use period for the center. T...
