COMMUNITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Body
I. SUMMARY

At its July 5, 2022, meeting, the City Council approved a Community Scholarship Program that will provide grants to residents to offset the costs of registration to select Department activities. A total of $50,000 was approved for low-to-moderate income households interested in Youth Sports, Enrichment, Kids Club, Day Camp, or Early Childhood Education. Staff is currently in the process of updating scholarship forms using Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) guidelines and anticipate advertising the scholarship program by the end of August. Additionally, staff is in the process of determining the grant amount each participant can be awarded, as the goal is to expend the $50,000 by the end of this fiscal year, while being able to assist all qualified applicants.

IV. BACKGROUND

With the recent increase in the cost of living, residents interested in participating in Community Services programs are increasingly seeking scholarship opportunities to offset the cost. To respond to this circumstance, a scholarship program was proposed that would assist low-to-moderate income Carson residents by offering scholarships for a portion of the registration fees. The scholarship would be available to participants in Youth Sports, Enrichment, Kids Club, Day Camp, and Early Childhood Education.
On July 5, 2022, the City Council approved this proposal, and provided $50,000 in funding. Staff is currently updating scholarship forms using CDBG guidelines, and determining an appropriate scholarship award as the funds must be expended by the end of the fiscal year, while assisting all applicants that qualify. Staff anticipates advertising this program in late August.
