IV. BACKGROUND
With the recent shooting incident at Foisia Park during the baseball season on Saturday, May 21, 2022, and the national tragedies involving gun violence, Commissioners requested more information on how Community Services staff are being trained and the current protocols that are in place.
In response to a shooting incident at Foisia Park on May 21, 2022, the City held a Community meeting on Saturday, May 28, 2022, to address what occurred and any safety concerns that residents may have. As a result of the meeting, the Mayor sent a letter to the Youth Sport teams that were present at Foisia Park during the incident (Exhibit 1).
Active Shooter trainings are a regular part of the Department’s biannual in-services. LASD staff are invited to simulate an active shooter incident and provide training on what to do. This topic was recently presented during the Department’s Summer In-service on Thursday, June 2, 2022. Sergeant Hernandez from the LASD provided a forty-minute Active Shooter presentation and answered questions regarding Active Shooter situations (Exhibit 2).
In 2019, safe rooms were identified at each facility (Exhibit 3). The Park Supervisors have recently been directed to work with the LASD Park Patrol to review active shooter plans at their facility.
V. FISCAL IMPACT
