CONSIDER SELECTION OF THE MAYOR PRO-TEMPORE (CITY COUNCIL)

I. SUMMARY

This item provides an opportunity for the City Council to select the next Mayor Pro Tempore for the City of Carson. The purpose of the Mayor Pro Tempore role is to perform the duties of the Mayor during any period of the Mayor's absence or disability.
Section 302 (C) of the City Charter states the Mayor Pro Tempore shall be selected biennially in the month of January for a two-year term by a majority vote of the City Council.
At the January 14, 2020, City Council Meeting the City Council selected Councilmember Dear to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore consistent with the process outlined in Section 302 of the City Charter.


II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation

SELECT the next Mayor Pro Tempore for the City of Carson by a majority vote of the members of the City Council.

TAKE another action the City Council deems appropriate and that is consistent with applicable laws.


IV. BACKGROUND

The Mayor Pro Tempore shall perform the duties of the Mayor during any period of the Mayor's absence or disability. The approach taken in January 2020 with appointing City Councilmember Dear as Mayor Pro Tempore follows the process outlined in the City Charter.
The City of Carson City Charter states:
Section 302 (C) Mayor; Mayor Pro Tempore
Mayor Pro Tempore. The mayor pro tempore shall perform the duties of the mayor during any period of the mayor's absence or disability. The mayor pro tempore shall be selected biennially in the month of January by a majority vote of the members of the City Council and shall serve for a term of two (2) years until their successor is selected. The city council by ordinance or resolution may establish a rotational system for such office among the council members.
