CONSIDER AND DISCUSS RECOMMENDATIONS OF INSTALLING SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS IN SPECIFIED LOCATIONS IN THE CITY TO ASSIST IN CRIME PREVENTION AND DETECTION (CITY COUNCIL)

I. SUMMARY

Public safety has been one of this City Council's highest priorities. This priority was reiterated and reaffirmed during the City Council workshop on Mission, Vision and Priorities held on March 2, 2021. In addition, during other discussions in the recent past on how the City can use technology to assist in reducing crime in the city, the City Council expressed its support for the installation of surveillance cameras at key locations in the city, including entrances and exits to the community, for crime prevention and detection. So that the City Council and the public is keep abreast of initiatives by staff in this regard, Councilman Jawane Hilton requested that this item be placed on the City Council meeting agenda.


II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation

TAKE the following action:
CONSIDER and DISCUSS recommendations of installing cameras at specified locations in the city to assist in crime prevention and detection.

IV. BACKGROUND

The recent uptick in crime throughout the country is also being experienced in Carson. This has heightened the City Council's interest in placing surveillance cameras at key locations in the city. Surveillance cameras help to deter crime while providing an advanced tool for law enforcement to use to solve cases. Having the appropriate surveillance cameras and equipment can provide the Sheriff's Department (LASD) the ability to view recordings that could lead to the arrest of a suspect and be used in a court of law as admissible evidence. Surveillance systems will enable access directly to LASD to view, monitor and respond to activities of a potential crime scene.
