CONSIDER AN UPDATE ON FILLING THE CITY COUNCIL VACANCY

I. SUMMARY
On March 11, 2021, the City Council held a Special Meeting to fill the City Council Vacancy, and approved adoption of Resolution 21-033 calling for a Special Election for District 4 on November 2, 2021, with no interim appointment. This item is to summarize the action taken.
II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation
DISCUSS and SUMMARIZE the action taken at the March 11, 2021, City Council Special Meeting.

TAKE another action the City Council deems appropriate.
IV. BACKGROUND
The City had four options with respect to the vacant City Council seat: (1) appoint a new Councilmember to fill a citywide seat for the remainder of the term of the vacated seat; (2) hold a special election for District 4 in November, 2021 to be consolidated with the County of Los Angeles election; (3) hold a special election for District 4 in August, 2021, which would be all mail-in, and have the County conduct that election on behalf of the City; and (4) appoint a new Councilmember to serve until either the August or November election for results are certified.

There is no direct fiscal impact associated with this report.
