CONSIDERATION TO APPROVE THE AMENDED SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENT FOR FY 2020-21 AND AUTHORIZE THE CITY MANAGER TO EXECUTE THE SERVICE LEVEL AGREEMENT WITH THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT (CITY COUNCIL)

I. SUMMARY

The City of Carson's current contract with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) was approved on June 18, 2019 with a five year term. The City and LASD have a positive working relationship and the LASD provides outstanding service to the community. The City Council is asked to authorize the City Manager to execute the amended Service Level Agreement for FY 2020-21.


II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation

TAKE the following actions:
1. AUTHORIZE the City Manager to execute the amended Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Service Level Agreement for FY 2020-21.

IV. BACKGROUND

The City of Carson has contracted with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to provide law enforcement services since the City's inception in 1968. In the 52 years since, the City has maintained a very positive working relationship with the LASD. Moreover, the Sheriff's department has provided excellent service during this time.
On June 2020, The Board of Supervisors approved a 5% increase for law enforcement services across Los Angeles County for all Contract Cities, but agreed to forego the recommended .5% increase to the liability insurance, saving the City a little more than $100,000.


V. FISCAL IMPACT

The Service Level Agreement FY 2020-21 contains the same number of personnel as the prior year but, as projected, the cost of services has increased from $20,905,000 to $22,073,228. Funding for the Sheriff's contract is included in FY2020-21 annual budget approved by the City Council on June 16, 2020.
