Title

FURTHER CONSIDERATION OF THE LOCATION OF THE SUMMER 2019 ENRICHMENT PROGRAM ACTIVITIES  (CITY COUNCIL)

Body

I.                     SUMMARY

Recreation staff was tasked with finding a central location so participants in the 3-in-1 summer program and other Enrichment program classes are conveniently located in one location. This option will eliminate the need of parents transporting their children to different facilities.

The attached draft plan has been presented in general conversation with representatives of the Enrichment Volunteer Association (“Association”) that expressed their enthusiasm for this option and approval of Foisia Park as a very good match, addressing the desires of the Association of one facility programming (excluding Teen Enrichment program successfully located at Stevenson Park starting summer 2018 with 25 participants).

Aside from being a park where recreation activities for youth and children are traditionally programmed allowing children to enjoy all park amenities and resources, Foisia Park also is very appealing to the Enrichment Program parents who appreciate the opportunity to take full advantage of the Foisia swimming pool whenever possible as part of summer Enrichment programming.

Taking into consideration of the overall desires of the Association, staff created the attached 2019 summer schedule for Foisia Park. This schedule accommodates Enrichment and existing summer programming needs.

IV.                     BACKGROUND

At the April 2, 2019 City Council meeting, the Enrichment Volunteer Association expressed their desire for a central location for Enrichment classes and activities for summer 2019. It was apparent that parents desired a central location so participants in the 3-in-1 summer program and other Enrichment program classes were conveniently located in one location, eliminating the need of parents transporting their children to different facilities.

Staff committed to look deeper into the parents’ desire of one location for Enrichment programming (excluding Teen Enrichment program successfully at Stevenson Park starting summer 2018 with 25 participants) and creating a win-win outcome

Staff took Council direction to look at central programming opportunities in parks in the city

Staff worked with Enrichment Association on creating a survey

Staff submitted LAUSD Application for Civic Center Use of School Facilities for Carnegie Middle School

Staff created a project taskforce to look at all and any opportunities of central programming

Working together as a team, Public Safety, Public Works, and Parks and Recreation identified a location for summer 2019 Enrichment classes and beyond. This location appears to be very suitable for school year Enrichment programming as well.

Taking into consideration of overall desires of Enrichment Volunteer Association, staff created the attached 2019 summer schedule for Foisia Park. This schedule accommodates Enrichment and existing summer programming needs.
