I. SUMMARY

The Council is being asked to consider designating an individual for the 2018 Leaves of Carson Volunteer Recognition Program in the Posthumous Category who has made a significant contribution to the Carson community.

Recommendation

Designate an individual for the 2018 Leaves of Carson Volunteer Recognition Program in the posthumous category.

IV. BACKGROUND

The Leaves of Carson is an awards program that the Public Relations Commission started in 2003 to recognize individuals or organizations for their outstanding volunteer efforts in the Carson Community.
Six awardees are selected in six different categories, namely Business, Carson Resident, Education, Non-Profit Organization, Public Safety, and Public Sector by a panel of judges selected by the Public Relations Commission. The seventh awardee for the Posthumous Category is at the discretion of the City Council. Two deceased residents are nominated under this category by the community for Council's consideration (Exhibit 1).
The Leaves of Carson honorees will be recognized in a ceremony on January 20, 2018 that will take place in Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center. The honorees' names will be engraved on a leaf and added to the "tree of life," which is displayed at the Community Center lobby.
Former recipients of the Leaves of Carson in the Posthumous Category are attached to this staff report.

V. FISCAL IMPACT

Cost for engraving the names of the awardees to the "tree of life" have been budgeted for in the City Council account 01-10-000-003-6008. There is approximately $900 available in the donation account to pay for the awards cere...
