CONSIDER AMENDING THE FY2016/17 BUDGET TO INCREASE FUNDS AVAILABLE BY $50,037.29 TO PAY FOR EMPLOYMENT DEVELOPMENT YOUTH PROGRAM STAFF, DUE TO A CORRESPONDING REDUCTION IN AVAILABLE GRANT FUNDS (CITY COUNCIL)

I. SUMMARY

The Carson Career Center has historically experienced challenges in meeting the enrollment goals for the Youth Program. In FY2016/17, assistance was requested of the South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB), Inc. to help in meeting those goals. As a result of the assistance provided at the SBWIB's expense, the grant funding allocation to the Career Center for staff salaries was reduced in the amount of $50,037.29. Staff is requesting approval to amend the FY2016/17 budget to increase the general fund salary allocation by $50,037.29 to fund staff salaries.


II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation

APPROPRIATE $50,037.29 from the unreserved general fund FY2016/17 budget to the Employment Development Youth Program salaries account 01-70-730-881-5002.

IV. BACKGROUND

The Carson Career Center has historically experienced challenges in meeting the enrollment goals for the Youth Program. These goals are set as a measure of the effectiveness of the expenditure of grant funds for employment development. In FY2016/17, assistance was requested of the SBWIB by the Carson Career Center to help in meeting those goals. The SBWIB was willing to assist but the cost to provide staff assistance reduced the grant allocation for the Youth Program in the amount of $50,037.29. In order to make up the difference in staff salaries, staff is requesting approval to amend the FY2016/17 budget to increase the general fund salary allocation by $50,037.29.
