AUTHORIZE A FEE REDUCTION FOR THE USE OF THE COMMUNITY CENTER ROOMS FOR THE ACADEMY OF MEDICAL ARTS ANNUAL HEALTH EXPO (CITY COUNCIL)

I. SUMMARY

The Academy of Medical Arts, a small pilot school, on the campus of Carson High School prepares students for careers in the health care industry. For the past several years the school has hosted its annual Health Expo at the Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center.
The Health Expo is scheduled for February 15, 2017 at the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center. In order to facilitate the presentation of this event, the City Council is asked to consider reducing the facility rental fees (Exhibit No. 1).

II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation

AUTHORIZE a 40% fee reduction for use of the Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald Community Center for the Academy of Medical Arts.

IV. BACKGROUND

The Academy of Medical Arts Health Expo is scheduled for Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from 4:00 to 11:00 p.m. is a competitive expo that allows students to articulate their knowledge and demonstrate their skills in a health care event of their choosing. They are judged by their teachers, parents, and the school's industry partners. It is one of the school's signature events.

City Council adopted a Fee Reduction Policy in August 2016. The Community Services Department has developed a Fee Reduction Application (Exhibit No. 2). Organizations are eligible to receive a reduction of up to 40% of the total fees for use of the City Facilities.

In an effort to assist the school in presenting this event, the City Council is asked to consider their request for a 40% fee reduction of rooms and equipment totaling $1184 (Exhibit No.3). The City Council has the option of approving the total amount or a portion of the request.
