Title

CONSIDERATION OF A REPORT ON THE CITY OF CARSON MILITARY CAREER DAY HELD ON APRIL 7, 2016 AT THE CARSON COMMUNITY CENTER  (CITY COUNCIL)

Body

I.                     SUMMARY

During the March 15, 2016 Council Meeting, the City Council approved co-sponsorship of the 2016 Military Career Day by way of providing staff support to coordinate event preparations and use of City resources to promote the event. The purpose of Military Career Day is to expand opportunities for high school students to explore career options by providing information about military careers. In addition, Military Career Day is an opportunity to learn about all the benefits the different branches of the military offer. These benefits include ways to pay for education, provide technical training, build self-confidence, and develop leadership skills.

On April 7, 2016, the City of Carson Military Career Day successfully took place at the Carson Community Center with 328 high school students from Carson High School, Rancho Dominguez Preparatory School, Narbonne High School, and Phineas Banning High School. Board Member Richard Vladovic and Superintendent Christopher Downing led LAUSD’s active partnership in this undertaking. Local District South Operations coordinators, school principals, teachers, college counselors, and parent center coordinators were present to support the event.

Each of the military branches, namely the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard, conducted six 20-minute information sessions for the duration of the event.

IV.                     BACKGROUND

Following the City Council approval to co-sponsor the 2016 Military Career Day by way of staff support and event promotion, the City of Carson Military Career Day took place on April 7, 2016, from 8:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., at the Carson Community Center. A total of 328 students from Carson High School, Rancho Dominguez Preparatory School, Narbonne High School, and Phineas Banning High School participated in the event. The students were transported by nine buses provided by LAUSD Local District South and the Office of Dr. Richard Vladovic.

A short program opened the event from 8:30 A.M. to 8:50 A.M. with Dr. Richard Vladovic as the keynote speaker. Afterwhich, the students were instructed to proceed to their assigned groups as indicated on their name tags. Each group was led by a group leader from one of the military branches. The leaders led their groups to the break-out rooms for the different information sessions. There were six sessions that each group participated in, one per military branch. The first session started at 9:05 A.M. and the last one ended at 11:30 A.M. The students were then led back to the main hall for the Closing Program which consisted mainly of certificate presentations to event partners. Thus, certificates of recognition from the City of Carson were presented to the military branches, LAUSD Local District South, Office of Dr. Richard Vladovic, Pacific American Student Services (PASS), and the participating schools.

Noteworthy to mention is the fact that the students were asked to answer evaluation questions before their last session ended. Out of 328 students, 242 evaluation forms were retrieved. The results, which are very positive and in fact more than satisfactory, are attached to this report.
