CONSIDERATION OF A REPORT ON THE CITY OF CARSON MILITARY CAREER DAY HELD ON APRIL 7, 2016 AT THE CARSON COMMUNITY CENTER (CITY COUNCIL)

Body
I. SUMMARY

During the March 15, 2016 Council Meeting, the City Council approved co-sponsorship of the 2016 Military Career Day by way of providing staff support to coordinate event preparations and use of City resources to promote the event. The purpose of Military Career Day is to expand opportunities for high school students to explore career options by providing information about military careers. In addition, Military Career Day is an opportunity to learn about all the benefits the different branches of the military offer. These benefits include ways to pay for education, provide technical training, build self-confidence, and develop leadership skills.
On April 7, 2016, the City of Carson Military Career Day successfully took place at the Carson Community Center with 328 high school students from Carson High School, Rancho Dominguez Preparatory School, Narbonne High School, and Phineas Banning High School. Board Member Richard Vladovic and Superintendent Christopher Downing led LAUSD's active partnership in this undertaking. Local District South Operations coordinators, school principals, teachers, college counselors, and parent center coordinators were present to support the event.
Each of the military branches, namely the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, National Guard, and Coast Guard, conducted six 20-minute information sessions for the duration of the event.
