SUBJECT:
Title
PRESENTATION BY ARTIST ALEXEY STEELE REGARDING A PROPOSED ART INSTALLATION AT DOLPHIN PARK
Body
I. SUMMARY
World-renown artist Alexey Steele has developed a new technology for public art installations that is both innovative and sustainable, and the materials used are not subject to degradation or vandalism. In the simplest terms, Mr. Steele will use a porcelain-like tile that can have color "baked" into it to create colorful murals that can kept clean with a mere garden hose. He is proposing a pilot installation of this new technology at Dolphin Park.
II. RECOMMENDATION
Recommendation
CONSIDER, DISCUSS and PROVIDE direction to staff.
Body
III. ALTERNATIVES
TAKE another action the Commission deems appropriate.
IV. BACKGROUND
Alexey Steele has long been affiliated with the City of Carson. His art studio was housed in the City for many years, and he was awarded multiple Cultural Arts grants for his public art projects. Earlier this year, Mr. Steele donated his time and resources to paint a mural at Dolphin Park during the Earth Day/Kids Fest event. He encouraged community members of all ages to place their painted handprints on the mural. The goal was to use the mural as a pilot installment of a portrait featuring his new porcelain-like material.
Mr. Steele's hope with his new proposal is to have community members vote to select a deserving Carson resident to honor with a portrait at the park. This person's portrait will be sketched live in front of interested community members. Ultimately, the portrait will be transferred onto the new porcelain-like material, and installed in the center of the existing mural at Dolphin Park (Exhibit Nos. 1 & 2).
V. FISCAL IMPACT
None at this time.
