This report provides an informational update to the City Council regarding the recent activities of City Commissions.

IV. BACKGROUND
Updates on recent and planned Commission activities are included below.
Economic Development Commission
The Economic Development Commission updated the bylaws to reflect the changes in the Charter and Commission. Those changes include but are not limited to the selection timeline for Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, compensation, and reports to Council. The bylaws will go to Council for approval at an upcoming meeting. The commission also received an update on the City of Carson’s Small Business Grant and Façade Improvement Programs.
Environmental Commission
The Environmental Commission went dark in July. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at 6:30 pm.
Public Works Commission
The Public Works Commission met on July 10, 2023. Staff provided an update on the street improvement projects that are ongoing and planned for fiscal year 2023-2024. Commissioners inquired about the service request process and Staff provided an explanation of the procedure. Commissioners requested an update on the center median maintenance project, which Staff will provide a thorough update on at the August meeting.
Human Relations Commission
The Human Relations Commission was dark in July 2023.
Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission
The Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Commission was notified that a new Division - Landscape and Park Maintenance - was added to the Department of Community Services. This action was made to improve and enhance communication between the staff that operates the City’s recreational facilities with the employees that maintain them, thereby ensuring that the upkeep of the parks are kept to the highest standards. With the last two 55th Anniversary Special Events taking place very soon, members have been receiving updates and providing comment on the final planning steps to present the Street Fair and the Tour de Carson. The Commission looks forward to attending both programs and celebrating this momentous year with the Carson community.
Planning Commission
A summary of Planning Commission actions is included as Exhibit 1.
Public Relations Commission
The Public Relations Commission will honor the 2023 Leaves of Carson awardees at the 55th Anniversary Street Fair on July 29, 2023.
Public Safety Commission
The Public Safety Commission was not able to have a formal meeting for the month of July due to a lack of a quorum. For the next scheduled meeting on August 17, it is on the agenda to have a briefing and Q & A with our Public Safety Engagement Officers.
Senior Citizens Advisory Commission
The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission voted to go dark in July and August.
Veterans Affairs Commission
Progress was made during the meeting, as the commissioners started creating subcommittees to plan for Veterans Day events. This initiative aims to enhance the commission's efforts in honoring and supporting veterans in our community. Furthermore, the commissioners are in the process of coordinating meetings with Park staff to discuss logistics and ensure the successful execution of the upcoming Veterans Day activities.
Overall, the meeting addressed both challenges and opportunities, with the commissioners actively working towards strengthening the commission's impact on veterans' affairs in our area.
Women’s Issues Commission
The Commission met on July 24, 2023 and provided a list of items delivered to the students at Cal State University Dominguez Hills - CSUDH food pantry. In the month June the Commissioners have supported and attended various meetings and events in the City of Carson.
Youth Commission
The Youth Commission is currently not able to hold meetings due to a lack of quorum and not having enough commissioners with validated appointments.
V. FISCAL IMPACT
There is no direct fiscal impact associated with this report. Recommendations for funding expenditures associated with the Commissions would be brought to the City Council separately and as needed.
